Open-jaw flights: what they are and when they pay
Flying into one city and home from another can save money and unlock a better itinerary. Here is how open-jaw bookings work.

The idea in one line
An open-jaw itinerary flies you somewhere other than the point you return from, so you can travel overland between the two. It is common on multi-country trips and often cheaper than a strict return.
Why it matters for your rights
If the two halves were booked as a single ticket, the return leg is protected if the outbound is disrupted. Booked separately, each half stands on its own — and a missed connection between them may not be the airline’s responsibility.
