Baggage claims sit under a different treaty. The amounts are less fixed than flight compensation, but the rule is firm: report it fast and keep every receipt.

The rule that applies
Baggage is governed by the Montreal Convention, not Regulation 261/2004. The current limit is 1,288 Special Drawing Rights per passenger — roughly €1,500 — for delay, damage or loss of checked baggage.
Delayed baggage
If your bag arrives late, you can claim the reasonable cost of essentials you had to buy — toiletries, a change of clothes — against the limit. Receipts matter more here than anywhere else. Report the delay at the airport before you leave.
Lost, damaged or missing
A bag is generally treated as lost if it has not arrived after 21 days. Damage must be reported within 7 days of receiving the bag, and delay within 21 days of it being placed at your disposal.
The “special drawing rights”
SDRs are an international accounting unit whose value moves against the euro. The 1,288 SDR limit has been worth between roughly €1,500 and €1,600 in recent years, so the exact figure depends on the date.
In short
- Compensation is Up to ~€1,500 per passenger, set by the regulation.
- The trigger is montreal convention.
- Extraordinary circumstances remove the fixed sum, but never the right to care.
- We work on a no-win, no-fee basis — nothing is owed on an unsuccessful claim.
